DBIA Milestone: Federal Sector Conference

On June 28, 2006, DBIA hosted its first Federal Sector Conference in Arlington, Va. "Command and Control" was the theme and sessions included at range of topics from key concepts for successful design-build project delivery to lessons learned through case studies of completed projects. Focusing on the use of design-build on Federal projects, the conference began with an inaugural DBIA Federal Owners' Forum that attracted owners spanning the breadth of Federal agencies. The first conference attracted 300 attendees, demonstrating a growing commitment to change across Federal agencies.

In 2007, the Design-Build for Federal Facilities Conference took place in late June at the L’Enfant Plaza Hotel in Washington, D.C. DBIA’s message to Federal owners and practitioners was “A Proven Process, Not a Panacea.” The events popularity was fueled by featured speakers from GSA, USACE, NAVFAC and the U.S. Air Force. Many of the projects highlighted at the first two Federal sector conferences have become legendary design-build success stories including the Pentagon renovation and the design-build of the U.S. Census Bureau Headquarters are two examples.

In the post-financial collapse, in the American Reinvestment and Recovery Act world (the “ARRA era”), design-build came into its own. Increasingly budget conscious and driven by the schedule constraints of the stimulus funding, agencies at the state and Federal level began to embrace design-build as never before.

In 2011, DBIA teamed with the Society of American Military Engineers (SAME) to deliver a Federal Project Delivery Symposium that attracted nearly double the number of attendees who had joined DBIA for previous conferences in this sector: a clear reflection of growing acceptance of design-build in the public realm.

Having demonstrated its value to owners and practitioners, DBIA’s 2013 Federal Project Delivery Symposium is scheduled for August 20-22, 2013. This year we will partner again with our friends at SAME. Mark your calendars! This year’s venue is the Gaylord National Harbor. See you there!
