DBIA Milestone: Social Media

​The power of social media has grown rapidly since Facebook and Twitter were first launched. LinkedIn has also emerged as a powerful business tool in the A/E/C industry. DBIA has embraced the most popular social networks to communicate with our members and the larger public. We recently revamped our social media strategy by creating a more active Facebook page, a more engaged Twitter presence and an increasingly popular blog.

DBIA’s initial foray into social media was through LinkedIn in 2010. The original DBIA LinkedIn group was founded by a young architect working for The Haskell Company named Matt Dahlberg. When he first joined LinkedIn, he wanted to create a discussion group for one of his favorite organizations, thus the DBIA group was created. Thanks to Matt’s initiative and dedication from the DBIA staff who manage discussions, the group now has over 11,000 members.

While LinkedIn was utilized by most professionals in our industry, Facebook and Twitter seemed to be something people used more for their personal lives. DBIA decided to experiment and created accounts for both sites; sharing photos on Facebook and tweeting about our upcoming events. We began to study the reasons certain posts were more successful than others and also studied what similar organizations were doing with their social media.

In early 2013, we developed a new social media plan for DBIA and began to leverage Facebook and Twitter more extensively; regularly sharing videos, relevant news, useful research and important deadlines for DBIA’s events and classes. Engagement exploded, leading to a 67% growth in Twitter followers and a whopping 187% growth in Facebook likes. We coincided this new social media strategy with a redesigned website and the launch DBIA’s Design-Build-Blog.

So far, our reinvigorated online presence has drawn increasing engagement from members, the A/E/C community, elected officials and key industry organizations. It has increased awareness of design-build and DBIA’s substantial resources and offerings.
