Following the tragic collapse of the I-35W Bridge in August 2007, the Minnesota Department of Transportation selected the Flatiron-Manson joint venture team, with FIGG as the designer, to reconnect Minneapolis with a new 10-lane interstate bridge across the Mississippi River. The new 1,216-foot-long structure, with a twin precast segmental 504-foot main span, was safely completed in less than a year. The final product is a sustainable, redundant, high-strength, high-performance “smart bridge” equipped with vibrating wire strain gauges, accelerometers and chloride sensors which are embedded to monitor its anticipated 100-year service life.

Completed on a fast-tracked schedule, the stadium consists of 7,777 seats and 2,500 beam seats, 3,000 parking spaces and 22 suites within the stadium.

The four-story building replaces the original constructed in 1975, which was condemned. The Brentwood Shop Expansion was a $43 million project to renovate and expand a major Washington Metro maintenance facility. Work included the complete bisection of the existing shop floor, the addition of three new service tracks and massive structural and system upgrades. Clark Design/Build completed the project without interrupting the day-to-day operations of the Brentwood Shop.

Renovation of the Texas State University Baseball and Softball stadiums included demolition of existing structures, addition of cantilevered covered metal bleachers, press boxes, luxury suites, home and visitor dugouts, batting cages, restrooms, ticket offices, a maintenance structure, an entrance, a bus stop and additional ADA accessible parking.

An intense storm caused multiple failures within a stormwater conveyance system which threatened two adjacent buildings. CDM assisted Clay County, Florida, in an emergency response which was converted to a design-build contract for the full repair and rehabilitation of both open channel and underground components of the stormwater system.

The East Harlem School is a year-round middle school that recruits students from low-income families. The new 27,800-square-foot building allows the school to triple in size to meet the urgent educational needs of the neighborhood. Despite the school’s extremely tight budget, caused by the high cost of New York City construction and its location within a flood zone, the project resulted in substantial cost savings, producing a building that otherwise would have been out of reach for the school.

A unique housing solution, this complex is a riff on the traditional courtyard scheme, expanding on a typically formulaic architectural typology. Angled slots slice through the courtyard block to link the city to public mountain trails above while a pedestrian street over covered parking provides access to the landscape and to 14 affordable family units.
