Description: The John James Audubon Bridge is Louisiana’s first design-build project, providing a Mississippi River crossing between Pointe Coupee and West Feliciana Parishes. At 1,583 feet long, the main span is the longest cable-stayed span in the Western Hemisphere, replacing ferry service between New Roads and St. Francisville, La. The bridge is the only river crossing between Natchez, Miss., and Baton Rouge, La. The project includes approximately 12 miles of approach roadways and seven smaller bridges. |

Description: The GEO Group’s Riverbend Correctional facility is a public-private partnership detention facility built to house 1,500 State of Georgia offenders. The $71-million project included 14 separate buildings and had a design-build schedule of just 16 months. The team overcame challenges including unforeseen groundwater, unsuitable soils, rock blasting and remediation of three streams. Resolving these issues left only 10 months for construction after permits were received. Even so, the team met the client’s late request to deliver the project one month early. |

Miramar Brig serves as the Navy Personnel Command’s military confinement facility for the entire southwest region and was created through the Base Realignment and Closure (BRAC) Act of 2005. The brig has 200 precast concrete cells that accommodate men and women. |

Description: As part of the U.S. Agency for International Development’s Pakistan Reconstruction Program, CDM Smith designed and built four earthquake resistant schools in the Bagh district of Azad Jammu and Kashmir, Pakistan. The program rebuilt many the schools and hospitals destroyed in the country’s devastating earthquake on October 8, 2005. The project aided recovery by fast tracking completion of the schools, performing extensive community outreach and providing job training that will continue to benefit the local workforce. |

Description: The Walter Reed National Military Medical Center is among the military’s flagship healthcare facilities. Design-build provided the government with the schedule and budget certainty the project demanded. The scope of work included the 560,000-square-foot America Building— the military health system’s largest ambulatory building. The Arrowhead Building is a 165,000-square-foot in-patient addition to an existing hospital. The project also featured 450,000 square feet of renovations to existing medical facilities as well as significant traffic and infrastructure improvements. |

Teqton, a jointless maintenance-free floor slab, was installed in this facility, and is the first of its kind in the U.S. This is Siemens’ first LEED Gold certified production facility in the U.S. and the first LEED Gold new construction/industrial site in Kansas. |

Description: The new headquarters of the Cuyahoga Metropolitan Housing Authority (CMHA) consists of, a 75,000-square-foot office building and a 25,000-square-foot vehicle maintenance and storage area. The latter includes a fueling station, car wash, 500-car parking area and green space. CMHA employed an innovative form of integrated project delivery in procuring design-build services for this LEED Silver complex. The design-build team and on-site workforce exceeded a 25 percent minority and local workforce participation goals. |

Description: The Alaska Airlines LAX Terminal 6 Renovation project was a $238-million renovation of a 50-year-old facility. The 13-month project was a collaborative effort between Hensel Phelps, Fentress Architects, Alaska Airlines and Los Angeles World Airports. Alaska Airlines unveiled its “Airport of the Future” in which traditional ticket counters were replaced with customer-friendly check-in kiosks. Additional work included an international arrivals corridor, a new “Board Room” airline lounge, an inline baggage system, new fire and life safety systems, finish upgrades and a communications system that supports all airlines. |

Description: The new $103.8-million library renovation and expansion project at San Francisco State University accommodates a growing student population and corrects structural inadequacies while updating the building’s electrical and telecommunication systems. Originally constructed in three phases (1953, 1959 and 1971), this two-phase design-build renovation project included a 60,000-square-foot “West Addition” that houses book stacks and an automated book retrieval system at ground level; the construction of a 20,000-square-foot “North Addition;” and the renovation and seismic reinforcement of the 282,500-square-foot existing library. |

Description: The Sharp Chula Vista Emergency Room project involved a 10,000-square-foot renovation and expansion of an existing emergency department. It created a modern layout, enlarged waiting room, new triage area, bronchoscopy and endoscopy suite, 19 treatment bays and four negative pressure treatment rooms. The efficiency of the new program allowed for six additional treatment bays within the project budget. Description: The renovation of Smith Hall provided one-, two- and three-bedroom suites, offices, common areas, lounges, laundry rooms and storage spaces within CU Boulder’s Tuscan Vernacular architectural tradition. Smith Hall is a 55,949-square-foot renovation coupled with a new 38,638-square-foot addition totaling 332 beds. The 136-bed addition required integrating the new building into the existing façade of the Kittredge Complex, whose stones were quarried 45 years ago. The team provided today’s students – and tomorrow’s leaders – with the highest quality. |

Description: The $2.425-billion Intercounty Connector is an 18.8-mile highway that connects major transportation corridors north of Washington, D.C. The all-electronic tolling facility provides a safe travel alternative to overcrowded local roads. It was implemented using three design-build teams which included more than 200 contractors and subcontractors. Its $370-million environmental program included a comprehensive set of avoidance, minimization and mitigation measures which were undertaken during the roadway’s construction. The result was a roadway many have called “America’s Greenest Highway.” |

Description: This 30-mile-long stretch of State Route 101L is a key urban transportation corridor linking three major freeways in the Phoenix metropolitan area. The Kiewit/Sundt Joint Venture developed an innovative design-build approach that delivered the project in less than nine months instead of the originally estimated two years. This project was completed under budget, allowing the Arizona Department of Transportation to add improvements that enhance the freeway’s capacity, durability and serviceability. |

Description: The joint venture A &W Highway Contractors created a new Single Point Urban Interchange at 11400 South and I-15, added northbound and southbound auxiliary lanes on I-15 from 11400 South to 12300 South, reconstructed all lanes of I-15 between 10600 South and 12300 South and constructed five miles of five-lane urban arterial. New bridges carry I-15 traffic over 11400 South, the Union Pacific Railroad, the Jordan River and multiple canal crossings. |

Description: The Spokane County Regional Water Reclamation Facility is an eight-million-gallons-per-day wastewater treatment facility operating under some of North America’s most stringent effluent phosphorus limits, including a seasonal phosphorus average of less than 50 micrograms per liter (50 parts per billion). Meeting these effluent discharge requirements served as the overriding motivation for the project team and required a true design-build-operate partnership between Spokane County and CH2M HILL. |

It consists of a diversion structure, five pump stations, 31 miles of pipeline and a state-of-the-art 15 million gallons per day water treatment plant. Description: In 1996, the city of Santa Monica closed the Charnock Well Field, one of its main well fields, after discovering MtBE contamination. After years of working toward an eventual legal settlement, the city awarded a design-build contract to Black & Veatch to complete the fast-tracked restoration project. In less than 20 months, Black & Veatch completed the project and helped the city to once again restore the well field as a sustainable source of water. |
