Design-Build Excellence in Transportation
When the Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT) began using design-build, the Department was challenged in converting the agency from the traditional design-bid-build system to the design-build system. However, through the development of design-build documents and forms, FDOT was able to ensure that the design-build philosophy was understo
od statewide. Now design-build accounts for 15% of the Department’s $2.7 Billion budget and is used to completed projects including interstate and roadway widening, bridge replacements, major interchanges, and bascule bridge repair.
FDOT strives to continuously improve and learn the design-build process. In addition to utilizing DBIA’s resources such as the DBIA Manual of Practice and education seminars, the Florida Department of Transportation has sought assistance from other associations such as AASHTO and the Florida Transportation Builder’s Association to assist in the development of their design-build programs.
