Prindle Leaves for HDR
William Prindle, II, AIA, LEED AP, has left HOK to serve as vice president and director of justice operations at HDR. Since 1975, HDR has designed some 650 courtrooms and more than 175,000 jail and prison beds and Mr. Prindle will continue the firm’s work in the justice area.
Kozlov joins Parsons
Brigadier General Alexander Kozlov, U.S. Army Reserve, has joined Parsons Infrastructure & Technology group as vice president. In this role, he will support the company’s projects in the Pacific Rim.
H&A Adds Hardin
Christopher Hardin, P.E. has joined Haley & Aldrich as a senior geotechnical /environmental engineer and Ash Management and Coal Combustion Products leader. With more than 20 years of experience, Mr. Hardin is an expert in coal ash storage and ash containment closure design.

CH2M HILL has acquired a financial stake in New Zealand-based CLIMsystems, Ltd., with the intent of combining the firms’ resources to bridge the gap between climate risk and sustainable solutions.

Conover Named CMAA Chairman
In early November, Dave Conover, HDR’s Water Business Group Construction Services director, was named chairman of the board of directors of the Construction Management Association of America. Mr. Conover has served on the board since 2006; in addition to serving as HDR’s national technical director of Construction Management Services, he was one of the first to earn the designation of Certified Construction Manager.
New Wetlands Chief
Phil Turnipseed, of the U.S. Geological Survey, has been named director of the National Wetlands Research Center in Lafayette, La.

New Contracts
New Sludge Treatment Plant for Hong Kong
Veolia Environment has won a contract to design, build and operate a state-of-the-art sludge treatment plant in the western part of the New Territories in Hong Kong. The new plant will treat the sewage sludge generated by Hong Kong’s 11 sewage treatment plants. It will have a treatment capacity of 2,000 metric tons a day and will eventually produce over 20 MW of electricity. The new plant is outside the urban area and will use water from a seawater desalination plant; the wastewater produced will be recycled on-site and there will be no discharges into the sea. In addition, at full capacity the plant will generate more electricity than it needs and the excess will be exported to the power grid for external use.
SAIC to Build Power Plant
SAIC has been awarded a prime contract by Terra Gen Sierra Holdings, LLC, to engineer, procure and construct a binary geothermal power plant in Churchill County, Nev., adjacent to the existing Dixie Valley geothermal facility. Construction will be performed by SAIC subsidiary The Benham Companies and is scheduled for completion by January of 2012.
Design-Build Hospital for Fort Hood
The Balfour Beatty/McCarthy Joint Venture Team, including Southland Industries, will be designing and constructing the new Carl R. Darnall Army Medical Center in Fort Hood, Texas, replacing the current 45-year-old hospital. Southland, which is responsible for designing and installing the HVAC and plumbing systems and remote central utility plant, has emphasized sustainability in their design.
Community Center in California
McCarthy Building Companies will be working with St. Joseph Health Systems, Latino Health Access and other team members to donate services for a new health and wellness community center and park in one of the poorest areas of California. The new center will include educational and recreational areas, as well as providing health services to people in downtown Santa Ana.
Utility Plant Replacement for LAX
On November 15, the Clark/McCarthy Joint Venture was awarded the contract to construct a replacement central utility plant at Los Angeles International Airport. The five-year design-build contract calls for demolishing the existing plant and construction on-site thermal energy storage and ancillary facilities. Roger Johnson, deputy executive director for Airport Development at LAX compared the project to conducting open-heart surgery.
Korte Wins Medical Clinic Contract
In late November, The Korte Company was awarded the Fort Bragg Troop and Family Medical Clinic project contract. The $15.3 million, 51,000-square-foot design-project is a steel framed, two-story facility scheduled for completion in the summer of 2012. Korte has been awarded eight of these projects, specific to the U.S. Military.
Under Construction
Veteran’s Home in California
The Northern California Veteran’s Home, the first in the Northstate, is under construction by Clark Design/Build. Completion of the complex is scheduled for spring of 2012 and, when completed, will house 150 veterans in individual rooms with private baths, as well as including common dining and living areas.
Omni Dallas Tops Out
On October 21, Omni Hotels & Resorts celebrated the topping out of the 23-story, 1,001-room Omni Dallas Hotel. The ceremony also marked one year since the groundbreaking for the building. Connected to the Dallas Convention Center by a skybridge, the new hotel is scheduled to open in 2012.
A Toast to the Environment
On November 29, Pro Con Inc. held a groundbreaking ceremony for the start of construction of a New Hampshire Liquor & Wine Outlet store in Nashua. The store is projected to reach a new eco-friendly green standard, including energy efficiency and water conservation and the re-use of demolition materials.
Completed Projects
China Lake Facility Opens
In October, Barnhart Balfour Beatty announced completion of the $9 million In-Service Engineering Facility at the Naval Air Weapons Station in China Lake, Calif. The 21,700-square-foot, one-story Engineering Facility supports in-service engineering sustainment, including the inspection, maintenance and packaging of munitions, and comprises laboratory work stations, support spaces and administrative offices. Designed to conserve resources, reduce operating costs and protect the environment, the facility includes energy saving features, efficient cooling equipment, storm water runoff management and a “cool roof” that can reduce its surface temperature by up to 100 degrees.
Pro Con Completes Renovation
On November 1, Pro Con Inc. of Manchester, N.H., completed a complete interior renovation at the New Haven Hotel. The seven-story hotel includes 118 guest rooms, a full-service restaurant, fitness center, business center and meeting spaces. As well as updated décor, the renovated hotel offers guests a number of electric outlets, internet connections and wireless internet, as well as large HD TVs that can be used as computer screens.

Parsons Projects Take Top Honors
Road & Bridges magazine has named several Parsons projects as some of the top projects of the year. Announced in October at Roads and Bridges Live 2010, the Parsons’ kcIcon in Missouri was named best road project. As the No. 2 road, the U.S. Sand Creek Byway in Idaho; ranked No. 7 was the Elwha River Bridge Replacement in Clallam County, Wash.; at No. 9 was the Pioneer Crossing project in American Fork, Utah; and at No. 10, the Beck Street design-build project in Salt Lake City.
