Kelly joins CH2M HILL

CH2M HILL is pleased to announce that John P. Kelly, P.E., has joined the firm’s San Antonio office as a senior program manager.

HDR Acquires Cooper

HDR has acquired Cooper Medical, a firm providing integrated design and construction services for healthcare facilities throughout the U.S. The new alliance will operate as HDR Cooper Medical.

B&V Expanding in Australia

Black & Veatch has expanded operations in Brisbane, Queensland, moving to a new office and making a number of key appointments and transfers. The changes are in response to growth in late 2010 and early 2011 and in anticipation of continued growth.

Awards and Honors

CH2M HILL has Perfect Safety Record

In November 2010, CH2M HILL was honored with a Perfect Record Award from The National Safety Council. The award recognizes companies that have completed at least 12 consecutive months without incurring an occupational injury or illness that resulted in days away from work or death.

B&V wins Multiple Industry Awards

In December 2010, Black & Veatch won both the Health & Safety Company of the Year and Environmental Company of the Year categories of the Civil Engineering Contractors North East Regional Awards 2010.

The company also earned a Business Achievement Award in the category of Industry Leadership from the Environmental Business Journal for its thought leadership series, “Overcoming Barriers to Water Reuse as part of an Integrated Water Portfolio.”

Williams Honored

Ron Williams, CH2M HILL wastewater treatment engineer, was named the 2010 Outstanding Engineer of the Year by the Greater Phoenix Area Engineering Community as part of the Engineers Week celebration.

Civil Engineers Recognize Prince

The American Society of Civil Engineers’ Region 9 has named Jessica Prince, P.E., an associate engineer based in CH2M HILL’s San Diego office, 2010 Outstanding Younger Civil Engineer.

Saikia-Eapen Elected

Porie Saikia-Eapen, CH2M HILL vice president and New York area manager, has been elected a governor of the New York Building Foundation by the Board of Directors of the New York Building Congress. She was also selected to serve on the Board of Directors of the Women Builders Council Inc. for 2011 and was also made a Chartered Institute of Building Ambassador for the United States.

B&V Roundtable

On November 2, 2010, Ralph Eberts, executive managing director in Black & Veatch’s global water bureau, moderated the second in a series of roundtables on economic pressures. Leaders of major U.S. utilities and water industry trade associations were among those sharing best practices that have succeeded in current economic conditions.

Speakers at T&DI/ASCE Conference

Sustainability experts from CH2M HILL were speakers at sessions of the first Green Streets and Highways Conference sponsored by the Transportation & Development Institute and the American Society of Civil Engineers.

Farmer Named Chair

John Farmer, director of construction for The Beck Group’s Eastern Division, was named board chairman for the Southern Polytechnic State University Construction Industry Advisory Board for the academic years 2010 through 2012. Mr. Beck earned a bachelor’s of architectural engineering from the university.

New Contracts

Better Water in Scotland

Early this year, Scottish Water selected Black &Veatch, in joint venture with Morrison Construction, to design and implement a £31 million initial phase of a stormwater management project to improve surface water quality for more than 80,000 people in Ayrshire.

Energy Upgrades for Leawood

In December the Leawood (Kansas) City Council decided to move ahead with $1.96 million in energy upgrades to city-owned facilities. The decision was in response to a study conducted by Burns & McDonnell, which found large cost savings could be achieved through measures to increase the energy efficiency of various city facilities.

New Canadian Project for CH2M HILL

The Region of Peel, Ontario, awarded CH2M HILL an $8 million contract for consulting services for detailed design for the southern section of the Hanlan Feedermain. Upon successful completion of the detailed design, provided satisfactory performance and budget approval, the firm will be awarded the contract administration and inspection component of the assignment.

Detroit School Contract

White Construction Co. was a member of the design-build team chosen to provide engineering and LEED certification consulting services for a new, $22.3 million, public school in Detroit.

Wastewater Improvements at Camp Pendleton

The Naval Facilities Engineering Command Southwest awarded a joint venture of CDM and JR Filanc Construction a design-build contract with options for operations and maintenance for wastewater infrastructure improvements at Marine Corps Base Camp Pendleton.

New Medical Center

In mid-December the joint venture team headed by Balfour Betty and McCarthy Construction Co. broke ground for the new Carl R. Darnall Army Medical Center in Fort Hood, Texas. The 947,000-square-foot, $534 million, project is the Department of Defense’s largest design-build for medical facilities currently planned.

Completed Projects

Clark Completes HQ Early

Clark Design/Build of California completed construction of the new California Independent System Operator Corporation Iron Point, Calif., facility three months ahead of schedule and under budget. The project, originally intended to achieve LEED Gold certification, has the potential to earn Platinum Certification from the U.S. Green Building Council.

Medical Tower Completed

In late February, Clark Construction Group-California, LP, reached substantial completion on the $310 million, 400,000-square-foot John Muir Medical Center, Walnut Creek, expansion and remodel project, The Tom and Billie Long Patient Care Tower. The new addition will open to patients in April.

Awards and Honors

Pro Con Honored

Pro Con Inc. of Manchester, N.H., was honored with four awards at The Associated Builders and Contractors’ 2010 Excellence in Construction celebration. Winning projects included The Renaissance Hotel and Spa and the Sidney J. Watson Arena at Bowdoin College, which received an Award of Excellence, and the Weston Solutions regional headquarters, which earned an Award of Merit and Sustainable Building Award.

Awards for Water Projects

The Clark County (Nevada) Water Reclamation District Solids Dewatering Facility, for which CH2M HILL provided engineering and design services, won Southwest Contractor’s Best of 2010 Award for Civil/Public Works in Nevada. The American Public Works Association-Nevada Section also honored the facility with its Project of the Year award in the Environmental category.

In addition, the Freeport Regional Water Authority Intake Facilities Project in Sacramento, Calif., has won the American Society of Civil Engineers California Region’s Geotechnical Project of the Year award.

Gold for NAVFAC

NAVFAC Washington was awarded their first LEED® certification for the Surface Sensors and Combat Systems Facility of the Naval Surface Warfare Center Dahlgren Division on the Naval Support Facility in Dahlgren, Va. Design-builder Haskell’s integrated approach is credited with helping the facility earn its LEED Gold certification.

Two Idaho Schools earn LEED Certification

The Van Buren Elementary School and Washington Elementary, by design-builder McKinstry, earned their LEED for Schools Silver and Gold certifications, respectively.

Industry News

SSA Campus Design Unveiled

In December the team that will build the new Social Security Administration campus in Maryland unveiled its preliminary design at a meeting of Baltimore’s Urban Design and Architecture Review Panel. AECOM is architect for the team, led by The JBG Companies. The $200 million office campus will house 1,660 SSA employees in northwest Baltimore.

Black & Veatch Busy

In Cincinnati, Ohio, B&V is designing the Lower Mill Creek Tunnel that could be a part of the Metropolitan Sewer District of Greater Cincinnati’s Project Groundwork, a multi-billion dollar and multi-year public works program that will reduce combined sewer overflows by 85 percent and eliminate all sanitary sewer overflows.

In Columbus, B&V began construction on a hard-rock stormwater overflow and relief sewer 180 feet below the surface. The runnel, 20 feet in diameter and more than four miles long, will limit combined sewer overflows into the Olentangy and Scioto rivers.
