Promotions and New Hires

New VP at Haskell

The Haskell Company has hired Wayne burrus as vice president and leader of its Commercial Group’s Healthcare Division. In this position, Mr. Burrus will be responsible for further growing Haskell’s design-build practice in the healthcare market.

WALTER P MOORE Announces New Principals

On October 5, WALTER P MOORE announced that Hollis Allen, Jr., P.E., Ben Cheplak, P.E., Doug Coenen, P.E., Joseph Dowd, P.E., Daron Hester, P.E., and Bart Miller, P.E., have been named principals of the firm.

Haskell Acauires E2M Engineering

On September 7, The Haskell Company announced that it had completed the acquisition of Atlanta-based E2M, which engineers manufacturing solutions for its customers in the food, beverage and consumer products industry. This adds an additional level of expertise to Haskell, allowing it to offer single-source delivery of large manufacturing plants to its clients.

WEF Honors Grady

The Water Environment Federation, at its Technical Exhibition and Conference in New Orleans October 2-6, honored C.P. Leslie Grady, Jr., Ph.D., P.E., DEE, with its Industrial Water Quality Lifetime Achievement Award.

Seckinger Honored

Ryan Seckinger, P.E., senior associate and senior engineer in the Structural Engineering Services Group in WALTER P MOORE’s Washington, D.C., office was chosen as the 2010 recipient of the firm’s Javier F. Horvilleur Outstanding Young Engineer Award.

World Water Week

In September, the Stockholm International Water Institute sponsored its 20th annual World Water Week, this year themed “The Water Quality Challenge – Prevention, Wise Use and Abatement.” Representing Black & Veatch’s global water business were Vice President James Clark, who moderated the seminar, and Paul Street, director of sustainable solutions, a panelist.

B&V Achieves Endorsement

In September, Black & Veatch was named an Endorsed Assessor for the British Institute of Asset Management’s specification for asset management.

Daigger new IWA President

At the 2010 International Water Conference held in Montreal September 19-24, Glen Daiger, CH2M HILL senior vice presdient and chief technology officer, took office as president of the association.

WEFTEC Roundtable

The Water Environment Federation’s 83rd annual Technical Exhibition and Conference took place in New Orleans, La.. On October 5 there was a roundtable featuring 15 global leaders in the water and wastewater industry who discussed how they were dealing with a wide range of economic pressures and overcoming the hurdles and capitalizing on the opportunities that the current global economy presents. Now is the time, participants said, to speak with one voice across the water and wastewater industyr so that regulators, politicians, community stakeholders and consumers all hear the same message.


Projects

Under Construction

Rio Grande Water Diverted

CH2M HILL and Western Summit Constructors, in a joint venture, have been working on the Buckman Direct Diversion Project since March 2008. On September 30, for the first time water was diverted from the Rio Grande and pumped 11 miles and 1,100 vertical feet up to the Buckman Regional Water Treatment Plant to begin filling the 8 million gallon presedimentation basis for testing the facility.

Completed Projects

Broken Arrow Hospital Completed

On September 20, The Haskell Company announced that it had completed construction on St. John Broken Arrow Hospital and its accompanying medical office building and medical campus in Broken Arrow, Okla. The project is the largest design-build healthcare project in the company’s 45-year history. The company credits the use of design-build in enabling it to complete the facility 25 percent faster than would have been possible using a traditional delivery method.

New Center for the New Semester

St. Louis Community College was able to start off their academic year in a new Harrison Education Center, compliments of KAI Design & Build. The new center, which replaces the 1994 building, will allow the College to expand and reach more students in an underserved area of the city. The new facility is LEED® registered, with a goal of Gold Certification. Encompassing 29,700 square feet, it will serve 400 to 500 credit students and 4,500 continuing education students.

B&V Completes Singapore Project

In late September, Black & Veatch completed western Singapore’s second Active, Beautiful, Clean Waters (ABC Waters) project at Jurong Lake. This is the firm’s second project for Singapore’s ABC Waters initiative, which was launched in April 2006 to turn the city’s network of drains, canals and reservoirs into beautiful streams, rivers and lakes. Ten projects are currently under way, with six scheduled for completion by the end of the year.

Sustainable Water Supply System Complete

The City of Aurora, Colo., celebrated the completion of the Prairie Waters Project on October 8. The project is an innovative and environmentally friendly water system that was finished ahead of schedule and more than $100 million under budget. It is a forward-looking project, designed to protect the city against drought using a sustainable water source by recapturing river water.

Awards and Honors

Haskell Wins ABC Awards

In September, the Florida First Coast Chapter of Associated Builders and Contractors honored Haskell with four Excellence in Construction Awards, including Project of the Year for the firm’s work on Baptist Medical Center South – Tower D. Haskell was also recognized for its work on Emerson Medical Plaza, Baymeadows Primary Care and Ave Maria University’s Mega Dorm.

Gold Hard Hat for MWH

MWH Constructors received a Gold Hard Hat award from Mountain States Construction Magazine for the design-build of the Space Innovation and Development Center headquarters at Schriever AFB.

Industry News

Environmental Benefits Are Far-Reaching

Johnson County Wastewater in Olathe, Kan., announced that the completion of its Black & Veatch-designed Douglas L. Smith Middle Basin Treatment Plant expansion and upgrade will improve water quality beyond the boundaries of its immediate area. Removing pollutants such as phosphorus and nitrogen improves the water quality in local streams, but that water will eventually flow into the Gulf of Mexico, reducing chemical levels in the waterways all along its path.
