About the Project:
Cargill, Inc., selected KBD Group to provide design-build services for an expansion of their existing grain transfer facility located off the shore of the Mississippi River in Halespoint, Tenn. The scope of this project included three large grain storage bins, a 32-foot-deep concrete pit, multiple below-grade tunnels and foundations and approximately 400 tons of structural steel towers. The addition of working and storage space for nearly one million bushels, a new truck receiving system, a new barge loading system and a new office building was also part of the scope. Site work included demolition of an existing access road and two existing buildings as well as construction of new gravel access roads and sediment basins, which included stripping, grading, and erosion control on an 8 acre site. The modernization of this project significantly increased the storage capacity and improved the speed to unload grain to better service customers. The expansion has saved critical time and reduced transportation expenses which allows Cargill to be able to increase the amount of grain it can handle.
