FY11 228 PN UEPH Schofield Barracks

Civic Buildings, National Award of Excellence, National Award of Merit

Fort Shafter, Oahu, Hawaii
The flexibility of design-build was a major factor in completing this project, allowing construction to begin while the final design was in process. Military installation force protection and anti-terrorism measures had to be incorporated which added complexity to the project. In addition, being located in Hawaii meant that all materials had to be shipped to the island, adding to schedule and budget considerations. One innovation on the project was use of insulating concrete form which served the dual purpose of meeting stringent anti-terrorism requirements and helping achieve the project’s energy saving goals. The Schofield Barracks is currently tracking to achieve a LEED Gold certification from the USGBC.
