Tom Porter is an independent business consultant specializing in construction industry, design-build, and risk management issues. He is Immediate Past Chairman and a current board member of the Design Build Institute of America. He formed Tom Porter Services LLC in 2009 after serving more than five years as Executive Vice President of Barton Malow Company, a $1.6 billion national construction services firm based in Michigan. Before that, Tom was Senior Vice President and General Counsel of the company.

During his tenure at Barton Malow, Tom was one of the top three leaders responsible for the overall firm, His line responsibilities covered all corporate support functions including: accounting and finance, marketing, human resources, information technology, quality, safety, risk management, legal, and corporate affairs. He was Chairman of the company’s insurance affiliate. Tom’s roles gave him experience with projects in all major delivery models and across multiple markets, including hospitals, universities, K-12 schools, power plants, stadiums, wastewater facilities, and federal installations.

Tom has been a licensed attorney since 1980. Before joining Barton Malow, he worked as a partner at Dykema Gossett, one of the largest law firms in Michigan, where he specialized in business litigation, including contracts and construction. Tom began his legal career as a trial and appellate attorney at the US Justice Department Civil Division in Washington, DC. In that role, the courtroom counsel handling contract, construction, and other commercial claims for all the various federal military and civilian departments. He obtained his law degree from the University of Michigan, magna cum laude, where he was a senior editor of the Law Review.
