Rising Demand for Education and Certification in Design-Build “Done Right”

Design-Build Institute of America (DBIA) responds by bolstering online education program and introducing electronic testing sites.

In response to exponential growth of the Design-Build Certification program, which parallels research showing that design-build project delivery now accounts for nearly half of all non-residential design and construction, the Institute has launched a major online initiative aimed meeting demand for education on best practices in the delivery method.

With nearly 2,000 current and prospective Designated Design-Build™ credential holders, DBIA has expanded its online course offerings to include Fundamentals of Project Delivery — a required course for those seeking design-build certification.

A refresher course specifically designed to prepare test-takers for the design-build certification examination is also part of the online expansion. Those seeking the certification can now study at their own pace, wherever they’d like, via 24/7 availability of this preparatory course.

Upon completion of studies, the rigorous examination, which measures candidates’ knowledge and comprehensive mastery of the required coursework, can now be taken electronically at over 300 testing centers nationwide. The era of pen and paper testing and traveling long distances to take the exam is over as testing centers are readily accessible across the nation.

In addition to helping candidates complete the requirements of Assoc. DBIA™ or DBIA™ certification, DBIA Online Learning is a perfect way to fulfill continuing education requirements for those maintaining their credential. It will also enable design-build team members to get up to speed quickly on a new aspect of design-build and provide owners with information they need to make informed decisions about the delivery model and/or acquisition strategy right for them. DBIA courses High Performance Incentive Contracting and Supercharged Source Selection are scheduled for release via DBIA Online Learning by March 2012. The forthcoming online course, Bridging Documents: Benefits, Risks and Effects on Liability, will interest anyone considering procuring or delivering a project that requires bridging documents and is also being released this Spring.

DBIA Online Learning provides 24/7 access to best practices and emerging trends in design-build project delivery and allows educational needs to be met conveniently and economically. The online course, Planning for Success: Acquisition Strategy Development for Design-Build, was developed specifically for owners interested in learning DBIA’s best value acquisition model.

Coursework is developed and taught by the Institute’s most highly regarded instructors. DBIA will continue to offer “live” training through its four yearly conferences and 14 regions and through Boot Camps, Certification Workshops and customized in-house training. “Expanding DBIA Online Learning makes sense in light of the current economic climate and the move toward design-build across all sectors of our industry,” said DBIA Executive Director Lisa Washington, CAE. “Providing additional learning opportunities , platforms and secure electronic testing sites allows DBIA to further its mission of teaching the effective integration of design and construction services to ensure success for owners and design and construction practitioners.”
