Research Finds Continued Growth of Design-Build Throughout United States
Washington, D.C., June 26, 2014 -- The Design-Build Institute of America (DBIA), the only organization that defines, teaches and promotes best practices in design-build, has released new research findings indicating that for the first time more than half of projects above $10 million are being completed through design-build project delivery. The newly released study confirms that the use of design-build has remained steady since its growth spurt at the end of the last decade, and also that Oregon and the Military sector are leading with the most dollars being spent on design-build projects.

Announcing the 2014 National Design-Build Student Competition First Round Winners

The Design-Build Institute of America (DBIA), the only organization that defines, teaches and promotes best practices in design-build, has announced the Regional winners of its third annual National Design-Build Student Competition. Student teams from leading design, construction and engineering universities across the country entered the competition to demonstrate design-build best practices by proposing a delivery solution to design and construct a more than 120,000-square-foot comprehensive recreation center on a college campus.

DBIA’s Richard Thomas Named to Transportation Research Board Committee on Project Delivery Methods.

DBIA Announces National Design-Build Student Competition Finalists
Washington, D.C., Oct. 28, 2013 – The Design-Build Institute of America (DBIA), the only organization that defines, teaches and promotes best practices in design-build, has announced the three finalists in its 2013 National Design-Build Student Competition. Student teams from Auburn University, California State University – Sacramento and Colorado State University will advance to the final round of the competition.
 
One of the nation’s most progressive design-build laws has been signed into law by the Governor of North Carolina (HB 857) to grant state and local government authorization to pursue design-build and public-private partnership project delivery. In addition, passage of the law is a great step forward for qualifications-based selection in the state.

Design-Build Project Delivery Holds Steady at Nearly 40 Percent of Non-Residential Construction Projects in the U.S.
The Design-Build Institute of America (DBIA), the only organization that defines, teaches and promotes best practices in design-build, has released research indicating that design-build project delivery represents nearly 40 percent of total market share in the United States, based on dollar value at the end of 2012. This represents an eight percent growth increase since 2005. The geographic area with the highest design-build delivery market share is the Pacific region at 59 percent. In addition, research findings show the Military sector dominates design-build project delivery with an 81 percent market share.

Design-Build Institute of America Celebrates Exemplary Collaboration and Integration in Project Delivery
The Design-Build Institute of America (DBIA), the only organization that defines, teaches and promotes best practices in design-build, today announced the 2013 Design-Build Project Award Winners, recognized for exemplary collaboration and integration in project delivery. Evaluated by a distinguished panel of industry experts, the award-winning projects were selected for demonstrating advanced and innovative project delivery, in addition to achieving budget and schedule goals and exceeding owner expectations.
 
After nearly failing to even pass the State House, a bill to extend design-build authority for New Orleans schools, and the Sewerage and Water Board was signed by the Governor this week (HB 559). The law extends the sunset date for the utilization of the design-build method until July 10, 2014 for projects of the Recovery School District and the Orleans Parish School Board. The date is extended until July 10, 2015 for projects of the Sewerage and Water Board of New Orleans. Design-build is a project delivery method where the same firm designs and builds a project under one contract. Studies have shown the method to be approximately 33 percent faster and 6 percent cheaper on average.
 
Connecticut took another step towards full design-build authority this week with passage of legislation authorizing the University of Connecticut to use the design-build delivery method (SB 889). The Bill, expected to become law, allows the university to select a design-builder based on qualifications, past performance, technical merit and project cost. This marks the second major design-build bill to pass in the last two years in Connecticut. In 2012 Governor Malloy signed historic legislation authorizing the Department of Transportation to use the design-build delivery method.

– When the U.S. Dept. of Energy’s Jeffrey M. Baker received the ENR Award of Excellence in 2011 for the nation’s first net-zero office building and the design-build best practices that facilitated the project, it was clearly a portent of things to come. Since 1964, Engineering News-Record (ENR) has selected yearly newsmakers for their innovations and achievements, for giving back to the industry and the public. Often referred to as the “Oscars” of the A/E/C community, ENR’s Awards program features a luncheon and annual black tie gala in New York City.

Announcing the 2013 Design-Build in Transportation Leadership Awards
– The Design-Build Institute of America (DBIA) is pleased to announce the 2013 Design-Build in Transportation Leadership Awards. Each year DBIA recognizes the individuals and agencies that have advanced design-build project delivery within the transportation sector. The winners are selected by DBIA’s Transportation Committee from nominations received from across this manifold industry and will be honored on March 19 at the 2013 Design-Build in Transportation Conference in Orlando, Florida.
 
Engineering News-Record’s Best of the Best 2012 Awards identify and honor the most outstanding construction efforts completed in the U.S. and Puerto Rico between July 2011 and June 2012. An additional honor, the Editor’s Choice award, identifies one project among the Best of the Best that “represent[s] the pinnacle of design and construction excellence.” Both ENR and DBIA singled out the John James Audubon Bridge, which spans the Mississippi River to connect New Roads and St. Francisville, La., as a particularly stunning example of design and construction. DBIA’s recognition highlighted the project team’s effective utilization of design-build to achieve excellence in design.

First Round of Inaugural National Design-Build Student Competition is Complete
– The Design-Build Institute of America (DBIA) is pleased to announce that the first round of judging for the inaugural National Design-Build Student Competition has concluded. Design-Build Institute of America Applauds Adoption of New Procurement Policy by United States Army Corps of Engineers
– In direct response to concerns expressed by the Design-Build Institute of America (DBIA) on behalf of its constituents, the United States Army Corps of Engineers (USACE) has issued a new internal policy that clarifies the appropriate use of one-step design-build procurement and emphasizes that a two-phase selection procedure remains the Corps’ highly preferred method for acquiring design-build services.
The new two-year, $105 billion surface transportation reauthorization, Moving Ahead for Progress in the 21st Century (MAP-21), contains key provisions that should further boost the use of design-build project delivery by state departments of transportation (DOTs).
As owners from both the public and private sector struggle to balance quality with budget issues, they increasingly understand that procurement strategy can affect both price and quality outcomes. The Design-Build Institute of America (DBIA) serves as a resource for owners seeking an understanding of best practices related to design-build procurement generally and qualifications-based selection (QBS) and best value selection (BVS) in particular. In response to demand, DBIA has released position statements that clarify to owners as well as industry the features and value of each selection method.

Connecticut Passes Transportation Design-Build Law
– The Connecticut House adjourned this morning after passing Governor Dannel Malloy’s design-build legislation (S.B. 33). Passage of S.B. 33 was a top legislative priority for both Governor Malloy and the Design-Build Institute of America (DBIA). The bill authorizes the Connecticut Department of Transportation (DOT) to use design-build as an alternative to the customary design-bid-build process.
At the 2012 Design-Build in Transportation Conference, the Design-Build Institute of America (DBIA) presented awards to the individuals and agencies that have advanced design-build project delivery within the transportation sector. The winners were selected by DBIA’s Transportation Committee and 2012 Conference Co-Chairs, Steve Mishler, P.E., of the Arizona Department of Transportation, and Cade Rowley, of Sundt Construction Inc., presented awards.

Teaming Agreement and Sub-Consultant Agreement added to Design-Build Standard Contracts

The Design-Build Institute of America (DBIA) is pleased to announce the release of two new contractual forms designed to complement and enrich the family of design-build standard contract forms updated in 2010. The DBIA Standard Form of Teaming Agreement is the first form teaming agreement specifically drafted for design-build and the new the DBIA Standard Form of Agreement between Design Consultant and Design Sub-Consultant acknowledges the important role designers and their sub-consultants play within design-build project delivery. Both of the new forms were developed by DBIA’s Contract Document Task Force in response to demand from the Institute’s members and customers.

New York State Flood Recovery Efforts Lead to Lifting of Restrictions on Design-Build -

Governor Andrew Cuomo has issued an executive order suspending regulations that mandate the hiring of separate design and construction firms for road and bridge projects. The Design-Build Institute of America (DBIA) and other groups had urged New York State to rescind restrictions on design-build project delivery, citing the urgent need for infrastructure repairs following severe flooding caused by Hurricane Irene.

The study was commissioned by the Design-Build Institute of America (DBIA) and was completed by RSMeans Reed Construction Data Market Intelligence. Design-Build Institute of America Expands Reach of DBIA Credential 

Recognizing the importance of full team integration early in the process, the Design-Build Certification Board decided the existing program failed to properly recognize the team members and owners’ representatives who are key early on in the design-build process. These key participants in the design-build process can now qualify for an Associate DBIA certification.

Design-Build Institute of America Offers Two New Courses in 2010

The Design-Build Institute of America (DBIA) introduced two new advanced courses that teach how to integrate sustainability into design-build construction projects and how to guide design-build projects during the post-award period. Sustainable design and construction project management have become driving parameters on many of today’s construction projects.
 
Capping a day chocked with bill signing and vetoes, Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger signed SB 43, allowing the San Francisco 49ers’ design-build stadium project to move forward.

The Design-Build Institute of America announced that it will release new design-build model contracts on May 7, 2009. The new documents build on DBIA’s first edition of model contracts released in 1999, but recognize that design-build participants need to be provided more flexibility and that a “one size” contract cannot fit all situations.
 
Washington, DC - The Design-Build Institute of America announced that Lisa Washington, CAE will assume the role of Executive Director upon the retirement of current DBIA President and CEO Lee Evey. The transition will be complete by June 2009. As Executive Director, Washington will serve as DBIA’s chief executive and will be accountable directly to the DBIA Board of Directors.
 
Washington, DC - The Design-Build Institute of America has extended its long-term relationship with PAI Sales Inc., and its principal Patrick Wilson, to continue to support DBIA's conferences with sales and marketing services for exhibits and sponsorships. In addition, DBIA has entered into an agreement with Naylor, LLC., to become the publisher of DBIA's Design-Build DATELINE journal. This new relationship will begin with the May 2009 issue of the journal.
 
Washington, DC - The House Appropriations Committee released Thursday, January 15, 2009 a copy the "American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009." The comprehensive $825 billion stimulus bill offers potential opportunities for design-builders noting thousands of construction projects across the country that include water/wastewater, transportation and vertical construction in several sectors, from military facilities to science and healthcare.
