ENR’s Best of the Best 2012 Editor’s Choice Award Demonstrates the Power of Design-Build Done Right

Teams implementing DBIA best practices well positioned to achieve Design-Excellence

Engineering News-Record’s Best of the Best 2012 Awards identify and honor the most outstanding construction efforts completed in the U.S. and Puerto Rico between July 2011 and June 2012. An additional honor, the Editor’s Choice award, identifies one project among the Best of the Best that “represent[s] the pinnacle of design and construction excellence.” Both ENR and DBIA singled out the John James Audubon Bridge, which spans the Mississippi River to connect New Roads and St. Francisville, La., as a particularly stunning example of design and construction. DBIA’s recognition highlighted the project team’s effective utilization of design-build to achieve excellence in design.

Noting that the bridge appears on the covers of both the February 11 issue of ENR and the current issue of DBIA’s Integration Quarterly (DBIA IQ), DBIA Executive Director and CEO Lisa Washington said, “The John James Audubon Bridge perfectly illustrates the fact that design-build project delivery can achieve – and even advance – design excellence in the built environment. I’m delighted, but not surprised, to have an additional opportunity to congratulate the Louisiana Department of Transportation and Development and the Audubon Bridge Constructors Joint Venture, especially JV members and long-time DBIA Industry Partners, Flatiron and Parsons.”

DBIA’s Design Excellence Award recognizes design-build projects that embody truly exceptional, innovative and inspirational design. Design-build is an integrated approach that delivers design and construction services under one contract with a single point of responsibility. DBIA is the only organization that defines, teaches and promotes best practices in design-build project delivery. DBIA takes the position that integrated design-build teams are well-positioned to deliver excellence in design.

Speaking last fall in New Orleans at the awards dinner, Design Excellence Jury Chair Janet White, FAIA, shared the jury’s comments on the Audubon Bridge with the audience. “Honest, simple materials and design that allow the environment itself to become a part of the user experience,” said one juror. Another called the structure “Exquisitely, minimally monumental.” Given America’s well-known infrastructure challenges, one distinguished member said, “This project highlights the fact that infrastructure can be either ugly or beautiful. This is an example of how we can raise the quality of life for the American people through design.”
