Featured Stories

Cover Story: Innovation in Highway Delivery New Members Only

By Brian Papernik and Brandon Davis

The Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) has increasingly encouraged the use of innovative project delivery and innovative transportation financing. Since 1990, the FHWA has allowed transportation agencies to experiment with innovative contracting practices through its Special Experimental Project Number 14 (SEP-14).

3D Design Makes Sense on Design-Build Projects New Members Only

By Randy Tardy, P.E., and Brad Henry, P.E.

While design-build project delivery has been very visible in growth, 3D modeling ironically has been less visible in growth. And yet it is becoming vital to project delivery. To gain an appreciation of 3D design, it is important to examine the history of 3D design in the AEC industry and then focus on the value of 3D for today's transportation projects.

Design-Build: A Key to the Development of the E-470 Toll Road in Colorado New Members Only

By Matthew M. McDole, P.E., Kenneth L. Frantz, P.E., and Neil Thomson, P.E.

E-470 is a toll highway that runs along the eastern perimeter of the Denver metropolitan area. The road extends approximately 47 miles from the intersection of State Highway C-470 and I-25 in Douglas County on the south, runs east and then north through Aurora, passes along the western edge of the Denver International Airport, continues north, and rejoins I-25 in Adams County.

The Fully Integrated Design-Builder New Members Only

By Michael Kennedy, Lawrence Hurley, P.E., and Lanford Pritchett, DBIA

The design-build delivery mechanism is becoming virtually routine in the heavy civil and highway construction industry across North America. In fact, design-build legislation across the U.S. is present in a majority of jurisdictions.

Maximize Form, Function, and Economy with Architectural Mesh Systems New Members Only

By Kevin Mayer

Architectural mesh systems contribute more than just aesthetics to transportation design. Teaming with an architectural mesh manufacturer in the early stages of design and specifying an architectural mesh system via a design-build approach maximizes form, function, and economy all in one design.
