When requesting a story from a contributor, the request is typically specific to the topic and type of story DATELINE wishes the contributor to write.
These can range from a story that simply highlights a specific project, its attributes, challenges and solutions that emerged from that particular projects, to very specific “how-to” features that focus on a very specific and particular aspect of design-build addressed in a project, what the issue is and how the design-builder addressed the challenges and problems.
Basic writers guidelines are as follows:
DATELINE is interested in features from 1,200-2,000 words written in a conversational format. These features should delve into the technical aspects of the project or subject, as DBIA readers are very knowledgeable in technical aspects of design and construction.
We prefer a “magazine feature” tone to one that reads like a research paper. Please do not include footnotes. If addressing a piece of research, quoting an individual or quoting data from another source, include the quote within the story and also the source within the copy. DATELINE makes some internal style decisions but uses Associated Press style as a framework for its editorial approach.
DATELINE editor reserves the right to edit any and all aspects of editorial submissions and has final say on content that appears in each issue. As a courtesy and to ensure copy is clean, clear and correct, DATELINE typically will have author review final edits to a given piece. As the piece is placed in DATELINE, however, this still could lead to edits to compensate for space constraints within the issue.
Headlines to support the submission are welcome and considered, but the headlines are the responsibility of the DATELINE editorial staff and will be altered if necessary.
Please provide any photos to accompany article submissions. Photos must be high-resolution (300 dpi or larger). DATELINE will use photos that best support the story as well as the layout.
Also, please provide short biographical information about authors, including name, title and company.
The journal reserves the right to edit any submission, and submissions should be for exclusive use by DATELINE.
Please include your full name and daytime phone number on all queries. We will do our best to respond to every inquiry, but will definitely respond to those that are the best fit for the journal. You also may email submission proposals or letters to Robin Lamerson, Naylor, LLC, Editor, at 800-369-6220 ext. 3408 - robin@naylor.com.
