Committee Reflections: Get Involved with DBIA's Transportation Committee

Design-build has advanced from the 1990s as the family of innovative contracting methodologies to today’s highly successful project delivery tool of the 21st century. Design-build has earned its place as a credible and effective way for owners to advance projects, both large and small.

If you have attended DBIA’s Transportation Design-Build Conferences since its first meeting in 1998, you have had the opportunity to see how the elements of design-build have transformed over the last 10 years. As always, DBIA provides a forum for experienced design-builders to present on the current state of the practice, provide an analysis of the emerging issues, and share their views on how this process will continue evolving into the future. This year’s stands out though as DBIA’s events continue to evolve and improve. Participants will gain a greater understanding of how to launch and sustain design-build as a project delivery tool and learn how engineers and contractors may be more competitive in their pursuit of these important projects.

After you attend this conference, I hope that you will leave with the enthusiasm of the conference planners and speakers. You will see how DBIA respects and honors owners, companies and individuals who work so hard in promoting and making design-build work in their locale. And I hope that you will feel called to promote design-build to your colleagues and owners.

This year we have expanded our award program to Owners of the Year. At an award dinner, we will honor our Multi-Modal Owner: T. Rick Grebner, P.E., Orange County Transportation Authority (OCTA); our Toll Roads Owner: Amadeo Saenz, Texas Department of Transportation; and our Non-Toll Roads Owner: Jay Hietpas, Minnesota Department of Transportation. At the dinner, other individuals as well as projects in design-build excellence will receive the recognition that they deserve.

Several years ago we started a scholarship program for Owners to help defray the cost of attending this valuable conference. An individual from an Owner (public or private) may contend for a scholarship that covers the registration. The recipients are determined through the Transportation Owners’ Council, which includes owners only.

Join us at this year’s Transportation Conference to learn more about design-build, meet professionals in the industry, support owners, and get more involved not only in DBIA, the Transportation Committee, or the Transportation Conference, but in your own backyard.
