Design-Build DATELINE
The Journal of the Design-Build Institute of America

March 2008

April is “Month of Steel”

DATELINE is poised for one of its most comprehensive looks at steel, the steel supply chain and other aspects of steel industry as it applies to construction in the upcoming April issue.

This “steel” issue will kick off an energized effort at more comprehensive coverage throughout DATELINE in the months to come.

It will also represent an expanding focus for the journal, as DBIA begins integrating more useful information throughout its pages, with features such as “how-to” and a wider variety of perspectives, writers and even some opinion.

With the help of the American Institute of Steel Construction (AISC) tentatively scheduled for April, DATELINE will include features that address items such as steel sustainability. With structural steel almost completely comprised of recycled content, the fact that it is even sustainable is sometimes forgotten.

In addition, the issue will explore the steel supply chain and provide design-builders information which could help them plan their steel use in the future. In the technology arena DATELINE will likely include a story about integrated project delivery and BIM associated with steel as well.

But that’s only a beginning.

As April nears, so does this year’s North American Steel Construction Conference (NASCC). Scheduled from April 2-5 in Nashville, Tenn., the annual conference will bring together about 3,000 engineers, fabricators, educators and others in the steel industry to participate in more than 60 educational sessions spread over the conferencefs four days.

In addition, about 400 booths and 160 exhibitors will make up the trade show, which takes place from April 2-4.

Stephen Kieran, a partner at Kiern Timberlake Associations LLP, is scheduled to present a keynote address, some of which will likely be drawn from his book, refabricating Architecture.

Other speakers scheduled include Walterio Lopez and Rafael Sabelli, who will discuss “Seismic Design of Buckling-Restrained Braced Frames.”

Registration is ongoing for the conference. Please visit www.aisc.org for more information. Online registration ends March 27.

As the April issue of DATELINE hits the mail in early April, don’t miss the expanded steel content, in-depth features and how-to material designed to make DATELINE the go-to journal for everything that is design-build and integrated project delivery.
