Back To Basics

As DATELINE explores sports, recreational and educational facilities this month, nothing is a more fitting book selection than Building Type Basics series. Founder and editor Stephen A. Klimlent describes the series as a “concise, practical guide for today’s design professional.” Another more colorful description comes from one book’s preface, describing it as “not a coffee-table book lavish with color photography but meager in usable context. Instead, it contains hands-on information that architects, their clients and consultants require in their work, especially in the crucial early phases of a project when it really counts.” Each book in the series begins by asking and answering 20 questions that usually arise in the early phases of a project commission. Answers are given in a convenient easy to use format and each book in the series also provides photographs, diagrams, floor plans and guidelines.

These books are a conveniently organized quick reference package and are an invaluable guide for busy, dedicated professionals who want to get moving quickly as they embark on a new project. The authoritative, up-to-date information will save architects countless hours of research.
