New President at Skanska
WHITESTONE, N.Y. — Rich Cavallaro is being promoted to the position of President of Skanska USA Civil effective January 2009. Cavallaro began his career with Skanska in 1996 as a senior estimator and was responsible for the winning bid for the firm’s first billion-dollar contract. As Executive Vice President of Skanska USA Civil Northeast, he has substantially increased the firm’s projects in a variety of fields, including some of the largest construction projects in New York.
Three Join Sundt
SACRAMENTO, Calif. — Allan L. Pflueger has joined Sundt Construction Inc.’s Sacramento office as a Project Superintendent, currently working on the renovation and expansion of the Sierra Vista Hospital. Steven J. Dosdall is now a Project Manager for Prestige Assisted Living in Manteca, Calif. Jerrie L. Waltz is a Senior Project Administrator with 25 years of experience and is working on the Valley Hi Laguna Library Project in Sacramento and the Chico State Student Housing Project in Chico, Calif.
In addition, James R. Poggemeyer was promoted to Business Development Representative and will be responsible for pursuing partnership and work opportunities in the East Valley area of Phoenix and Eastern and Southern Arizona, as well as with Portland Cement Concrete Pavement projects in the Southwestern U.S.
Stempien Promoted
SOUTHFIELD, Mich. — Barton Malow has named Robert L. Stempien, AIA, Senior Director of Business Development. In this position he will provide business development support for the K-12 and Higher Education groups, National Sports and Specialty Projects divisions and the Ohio and Chicago regional offices.
CH2M HILL Adds Oerke
DENVER — David W. Oerke, PE, has joined CH2M HILL as a principal technologist. Nationally recognized as an expert in the field of biosolids management and solids processing facility design, Oerke brings 29 years of experience to the Global Wastewater Technology Practice’s residuals management team.
New Graduate Joins H&A
RICHMOND, Va. — Avery Skees, EIT, a recent graduate of Old Dominion University, has joined the Mechanical Department of Hankins and Anderson Inc. Skees interned with the firm last summer.

CH2M HILL Top Enviro Firm
DENVER — For the third year in a row, Engineering News-Record has ranked CH2M HILL as the top U.S. environmental firm. CH2M HILL was also ranked in the top five in several subcategories, including water supply/treatment, wastewater treatment, consulting/studies, nuclear waste cleanup, engineering/design, environmental science and construction/remediation. The firm’s environmental and water projects cover a wide range of projects all over the world.
CH2M HILL and its employees demonstrate their concern for environmental matters in other ways as well. More than 100 offices and project sites worldwide raised more than $170,000 to help Water For People, an international non-profit organization that supports locally sustainable drinking water resources, sanitation facilities and health and hygiene education programs in developing countries.

HOUSTON — The U.S. Green Building Council awarded WALTER P MOORE’s new corporate office CI (Corporate Interiors) LEED® Silver certification Aug. 15. This certification was achieved through a variety of sustainable strategies, including energy use, lighting, water and material use.
Two of the “Under 40”
HOUSTON — In its July issue, Consulting-Specifying Engineer magazine named this year’s “40 Under 40,” which recognizes 40 building industry engineers under the age of 40 who stand out in their academic, professional, personal and community achievements. Among those honored were:
Gabriel A. Jiménez, Ph.D., PE, of WALTER P MOORE, nationally recognized as a leading engineer in the restoration of parking and post-tensioned structures and is a frequent lecturer for the International Parking Institute, the American Society of Civil Engineers, American Institute of Steel Structures and the Structural Stability Research Council.
Jason McFadden, EIT, project manager in Barton Malow’s southern region, who began his career with the firm as an intern on the Medlar Field at Lubrano Park job site at Penn State University. The baseball park became the first to earn LEED certification by the U.S. Green Building Council. Mr. McFadden is currently completing the Women’s Softball Complex at the Georgia Institute of Technology, Atlanta.

Construction Job Market
The nonresidential construction sector gained 2,900 jobs in August and 4,400 in July, while the residential sector lost 4,400 jobs in August alone.
Total construction employment in August 2008 was down 5.7 percent from 2007, a loss of 437,000 jobs. Total employment in the U.S. has declined, with the national employment rate hitting 6.1 percent in August, the highest rate since September 2003. On the other hand, recent declines in the prices of some key building supplies could help spur new construction.
CDM Selected
LOS ANGELES — CDM has been selected to serve on the bench of the Southern California Association of Governments as part of their Compass Blueprint 21 Program.
CDM will provide community, transportation and sustainability planning services to small cities eligible to receive up to $250,000 in grant money. Compass Blueprint 21 selects cities for these grants; as a bench consultant, CDM will conduct in-depth analyses of how cities can best protect the environment and improve mobility, while developing sustainable communities.
PSMA is now AEBL
LAFAYETTE, Calif. — The Professional Services Management Association (PSMA) has changed its name to the Association of AE Business Leaders (AEBL). In addition to the name change, the board of directors has appointed Kathryn Sprankle as the new executive director.
