CH2M HILL Hosts Delegation

DENVER — CH2M HILL hosted a group of water utility managers in August from the City of Cairo, Egypt, and surrounding regions to help them gain an understanding of new advances in water management. The delegation included middle managers with potential for greater responsibilities, selected by CH2M HILL, which developed a broad-based professional development program for them. The program covered advanced processes, technologies and management practices for water utilities, using state-of-the-art U.S. facilities as examples. A CH2M HILL team organized visits to Denver Water, Aurora Water, AWWA Research Foundation and the Upper Occoquan Service Authority Regional Water Reclamation Plant serving northern Virginia. The visit grew out of a CH2M HILL contract with U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID) in Egypt, under which the firm provides management assistance to the Egyptian government.

ABC and National Guard

WASHINGTON, D.C. — On Nov. 11, in honor of Veterans Day, the Associated Builders and Contractors signed a Statement of Support with the Employer Support of the Guard and Reserve, a Department of Defense Agency that promotes employer support of employees’ military service. The signing took place at ABC’s board of directors meeting in Long Beach, Calif.

A Tidal Wave

DENVER — CH2M HILL and U.S. Agency for International Development have been among the groups working to help those devastated by the 2004 tsunami in Sri Lanka and the Maldives. In addition to restoring what had been there before the Dec. 26 tsunami struck, water treatment facilities — which had not existed before — also supplied inhabitants with a business plan and instructions for water management.

All new construction was built with an eye to environmental impact and sustainable construction. The project also included vocational education training centers — nine are planned, with seven complete — to teach 40 different skill trades for 2,000 students a year.
