Korte Adds LEED® Pros

LAS VEGAS — The Korte Company recently announced that Katie Brechner, Jillian Bissell and Robert Marentette have all passed the United States Green Building Council (USGBC) test and have been designated LEED® Accredited Professionals. They join a growing number of associates at The Korte Company who are LEED Accredited as the company continues to strengthen its portfolio of LEED accredited projects.

“Sustainable design has always played a key role for us, especially in the area of design-build,” said Greg Korte, president of Korte’s Las Vegas Division. “Our clients in the military and government sectors have always prioritized sustainability, which has proven to be an advantage for us, as clients in other sectors begin to follow suit.”

Awards and Honors

I-35 Bridge Gets Award

LONGMONT, Colo. — Flatiron, one of the largest transportation and infrastructure contractors in North America, beat 12 other nationally recognized projects to take home the Associated General Contractors (AGC)/Aon Grand Award for the I-35W Bridge replacement in Minneapolis. This award is the highest honor given by the AGC for the most significant construction project of 2008.

Flatiron, with joint venture partner Manson Construction, worked with the Minnesota Department of Transportation to rebuild the I-35W Bridge over the Mississippi River after the old bridge collapsed in August 2007. The team completed the new interstate bridge on budget and three months ahead of schedule.

Incoming AGC president Doug Pruitt said that the I-35W Bridge was selected not only for the team’s hard work and diligence, but also because the project was crucial to rebuilding Americans’ confidence in the safety of the nation’s bridges, according to a statement released by the AGC.

Flatiron’s project manager Peter Sanderson, assistant project manager Bob Edwards from Manson and others accepted the award March 6, in San Diego on behalf of the entire team during an awards ceremony at the AGC National Convention.

CDM/CAPE Gets Guam Award

ANDERSEN AIR FORCE BASE, Guam — The CDM/CAPE joint venture was recognized with a 2008 Excellence in Construction award by the Guam Contractors’ Association for the Commercial Construction: $25 million to $100 million category. This award acknowledges CDM/CAPE’s exemplary performance in the construction of the base exchange (BX) shopping center for the Army and Air Force Exchange Service (AAFES).

The building’s construction is part of a larger effort by AAFES to adapt and improve the base in Guam to meet the demands of additional personnel being relocated from Japan. Nearly seven times larger than the facility it replaced, the new BX was constructed in just 18 months.

CDM/CAPE delivered the project safely and within budget, despite the numerous challenges presented by its remote island location. In addition to providing a modern, comfortable and exciting shopping and dining destination for the base’s 8,000 residents, the BX also supports the growing local community by creating employment opportunities.
