Barbara Jackson, Ph.D., DBIA, gives us a first look at her new Design-Build Library composed of four titles. Below, she discusses the first book in the series, Design-Build Essentials, which is being released January 1, 2010, and is already available for purchase at the DBIA Online Bookstore.
Per Dr. Jackson: “Design-build is and will remain a primary project delivery method in the United States. As its popularity and implementation continue to increase, so does the likelihood that contractors, architects and engineers will be required to manage projects using design-build methods. We are seeing more and more owners listing design-build education as part of their RFP evaluation criteria. In one recent RFP, the owner allotted 20 points for teams with members who possessed certification as a design-build professional. Design-build is clearly the future for young constructors, architects and engineers. University construction management, architecture and engineering programs are gearing up to incorporate design-build material into their curricula. Construction management programs in particular have recognized the need to teach design-build as a distinct segment of their curriculum. Several four-year univer-sities have established design-build masters or integrated project delivery programs.
To convey my passion for design-build practice and to support contractors, engineers and architects who want to build successful design-build teams and to instructors who want to support successful design-build programs, I am creating a new Design-Build Library. The Library introduces and thoroughly develops the design-build concepts these professionals will need to understand in order to mitigate risks, optimize results and be successful in the design-build arena. The four-volume library provides a complete tutorial on design-build practice and project ownership:
Volume I: Design-Build Essentials
Volume II: Design-Build: The Integrated Project Team
Volume III: Design-Build Project Management
Volume IV: Design-Build: An Owner’s Reference
As the first volume in the Design-Build Library, Design-Build Essentials, is truly a design-builder’s resource. Opening with an introduction to the industry and the fundamental distinctions of design-build, the book progresses to cover managing the design-build process, the integrated design-build team and conclude with a look at the future of the industry.
Virtually everything about the design-build process is different from the design-bid-build process. The solicitation, evaluation and selection process, team make-up, business relationships, design process, estimating procedures, design-cost interface and project management process all change in the highly collaborative and integrative design-build model.
To reflect the dynamic nature of design-build practice, I wanted everything about this series to be different. These are not stuffy, academic textbooks written by a non-practitioner. Each book in the Design-Build Library rolls theory and practice into a user-friendly resource that talks about design-build in a conversational way. I have filled each chapter with industry input that shows the faces and tells the stories of real contractors, architects, engineers, specialty contractors, superintendents, vendors and owners. Readers will encounter case studies and project team examples from multiple perspectives.
I want people to read the personal stories, testimonials and case studies in these books and talk about them. I want these books to serve both the AEC industry and the university markets. Most of all, I want people who have read these books and tried this delivery method to recommend design-build to other industry practitioners.”
