Projects to Watch

New Contracts

Hong Kong Selects B&V

The Hong Kong SAR Water Supplies Department selected Black & Veatch for a large expansion project at the Tai Po Water Treatment Works. B&V will design and oversee construction of the project that will improve water reliability for the area’s approximately seven million residents. The existing facility, designed by B&V, was completed in 2005 and took advantage of its location on a steep slope by stacking the plant’s layout. The design utilized space-saving technologies to allow for expansion, while retaining a small footprint. The project received the International Water Association’s Global Grand Prize in 2006.

SCS Wins San Bernardino Contract

SCS Field Services will monitor and report on groundwater at the Milliken Landfill under a three-year, $435,000 contract with the San Bernardino County Waste Management Department. The firm will provide operation, maintenance and management services for the landfill’s groundwater treatment system.

British Embassy Selects Design-Build

The British Embassy in Washington, D.C., has chosen to utilize design-build in their new utility plant refurbishment and addition of a co-generation unit for their facility. The new plant will provide the embassy offices and the Ambassador’s residence with back-up power in the event of a failure and allow for peak-shaving to reduce metered demand during times of extreme cold and heat. The contract with Pepco Energy Services provides for the design, installation and maintenance of the systems.

Under Construction

Groundbreaking in Singapore

A groundbreaking ceremony was held in early July for the Active, Beautiful, Clean Waters (ABC Waters) project on the shores of Singapore’s Jurong Lake. The ABC Waters Program’s goal is to provide sustainable solutions for drainage and storm water management while incorporating the wishes of the local community. Black & Veatch was appointed Watershed Manager of the Western Catchment of the ABC Waters Program and the Jurong Lake project is the first major milestone.

Completed Projects

Balfour Beatty Achieves Early Completion

Balfour Beatty Construction adopted a “do what is best for the project” mentality and maintained a sense of urgency in the schedule to achieve substantial completion of construction on the Food and Drug Administration’s Center for Devices and Radiological Health Office building three months early. The $93.7 million, 393,000-square-foot facility at the Silver Spring, Md., campus was formally dedicated in May.

Awards and Honors

Awards to B&V and Sundt

The Peoria Butler Drive Water Reclamation Facility project has been named a Public Works Project of the Year by the American Public Works Association. The city of Peoria, Ariz., managing agency, along with primary contractor Sundt Construction Inc. and primary consultant Black & Veatch Corporation, were presented with the award during the International Public Works Congress and Exposition. The chosen method of treatment allowed the city to provide high quality, reliable effluent recharge in a small footprint, allowing a facility compatible with its surroundings. The city has started design work for a public park on an adjacent property, which will be irrigated with reclaimed water from the facility.

Black & Veatch has also received awards for its project safety accomplishments. DWˆ R Cymru Welsh Water chose B&V’s Behavior on Safe Sites (BOSS) program for its Best Innovative Idea award at the utility’s 2009 Health & Safety Excellence awards. Scottish Water recognized the Glencorse Project at the utility’s Capital Programme Awards with an award in the Excellence in Health & Safety category. In addition, The Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents has commended Black & Veatch for its efforts to maintain the highest standards in occupational health and safety.
