Over 30 years ago, the city of Phoenix committed itself to a suburban “village” planning model that resulted in a decentralized distribution of the various components of the city. While this plan may have reduced urban congestion, it led to the neglect and stagnation of Phoenix’s historic downtown as development moved outward from the city’s center.

In the December issue of Design-Build Dateline, you heard from immediate past chair Tom Porter and current board chair John Young about new strategic planning initiatives aimed at positioning DBIA and our members for long-term success. By updating our vision, mission and values statement, DBIA has reaffirmed our commitment to promoting design-build as the optimal integrated project delivery method and to meeting the need for objective evaluation of other forms of integrated project delivery.

Legislative Update 
Richard Thomas
Congress passed three major spending bills related to military and VA construction, transportation and jobs — appropriations that provide over $137 billion for construction and maintenance. The bills passed the House before Christmas and the Senate is expected to follow suit in January.
