New Contracts
Water Project in Vietnam
Vietnam is in the midst of rapid growth and urbanization, moving from an agricultural to a market economy, and Black & Veatch will help supply the water needs in Danang. The Danang Priority Infrastructure Investment Project, funded by the World Bank, will improve sanitation and wastewater infrastructure and reduce pollution in waterways. It will also improve flood prevention measures for low-lying areas and essential roadways. Danang’s People’s Committee selected B&V to manage and supervise construction of the new infrastructure projects and work with the city to improve the effectiveness of organizations responsible for investment planning, land management and housing across the city.

McCarthy Marks Milestone
In October 2009, Soka University of America held a celebration to commemorate placement of the final roof truss on its new Performing Arts Center, approximately 50 percent complete. Constructed by McCarthy Building Companies Inc., the project is located on 1.9 acres on the university campus in Aliso Viejo, Calif. University officials, local dignitaries and the entire design and construction team attended the event and signed the truss before it was lifted into place and secured. While a building usually tops out when the last structural steel beam is placed, the project has four massive roof trusses — 16.5 feet tall and 114 feet wide – and marking the placement of the last enormous beam seemed worthy of note.
Completed Projects
Tiger Academy Opens
On August 24, 2009, the new Tiger Academy opened in Jacksonville, Fla. Haskell completed the charter school — owned by the UMCA of Florida’s First Coast — in time for the fall semester. The 6.6 acre site includes two single-story facilities totaling 32,650 square feet; currently 306 students attend up to second grade. The school plans to add a grade each year.
Awards
CDM Honored
CDM has been honored with the 2009 Outstanding Ground Water Project Award in the Ground Water Remediation category from the National Ground Water Association. The award recognizes the firm’s unique groundwater cleanup solution using enhanced anaerobic bioremediation for Rockwell Automation. CDM and Rockwell collaborated on an effective remediation solution for groundwater contamination at a nine-acre site in Orlando, Fla., that was a computer circuit board manufacturing facility. The site was contaminated by high-concentration, mixed chlorinated solvents that had leached into the groundwater due to poor chemical storage practices prior to Rockwell’s acquisition.
B&V Project’s Contributions Recognized
The Katrine Water Project’s contribution to the quality of life in Glasgow, Scotland, has been recognized with an award for sustainable development. The project has ensured a high-quality water supply for the city’s 700,000 residents. The Edmund Hanbly Medal, awarded by the Institution of Civil Engineers, “emphasizes the important contribution that civil engineering makes to the well being of mankind and the environment,” according to the organization’s award criteria. The Katrine Water Project was undertaken by Scottish Water, with Black & Veatch providing design and construction services in its role as lead contractor.
EPA Honors Green Building
In 2009 the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency honored innovative green building design ideas that mitigate the environmental and energy impacts of buildings. These concepts can help architects and builders reduce the more than 88 million tons of building-related construction and demolition debris sent to U.S. landfills each year and minimize the environmental impacts of those materials. The awards honor student and professional designs for buildings and building projects, as well as special categories, including the creation of green jobs. The winners and a gallery of projects can be seen at www.lifecyclebuilding.org.
