Like most of you, I consider myself a member of a number of professional communities. As president of American Water Works Service Company Inc. and American Water Services, I feel a professional obligation to contribute to organizations that represent my profession and my industry.

Serving a professional community in a volunteer capacity has rewards beyond those associated with ordinary membership. By giving time, you will help shape the future of your industry. And, you will meet people who will expand your thinking and contribute to your professional growth. Serving on DBIA’s Board of Directors is a unique opportunity for professional service. As a “big-tent” organization that brings together owners, design and construction practitioners and specialty contractors, DBIA member volunteers gain direct exposure to multiple viewpoints and perspectives on our ever-changing industry.

Right now, DBIA National invites DBIA members in good standing to submit nominations for the 2010 Board of Directors. We are seeking candidates who understand and support DBIA’s mission and goals and who are committed to advancing the understanding and use of design-build project delivery across all sectors and markets. In addition, candidates must agree to the responsibilities outlined in the Board Charter.

When reviewing candidates, the Nomination Committee will consider, among other things, the following:

  • Previous service to and support of DBIA by the nominee or his/her organization.
  • The nominee’s availability for up to four face-to-face meetings per year (with the exception of public owners, board members are responsible for their own travel costs).
  • The DBIA designation credential is preferred, though not required.

Of particular interest are individuals representing owner organizations, both public and private. However, nominees representing any member organization are encouraged and welcomed.

Although individuals may nominate other people, the full nomination package should come directly from the person being nominated to validate confirmation of the nominee’s interest. The nomination must include the following information:

  • Full resume and condensed bio (condensed version for use by DBIA if selected);
  • Photo (JPEG file for use by DBIA if selected);
  • Why you are interested in serving on the DBIA National Board;
  • A brief letter confirming your willingness to attend up to four board meetings per year without travel reimbursement (with the exception of public owners) and confirming your commitment to DBIA’s mission and strategic goals.
  • The names and contact information of at least two DBIA members who “second” the nomination.

DBIA Issues Position Statements

During its April 19, 2010, meeting, the DBIA Board of Directors approved three position statements. These statements are the first issued in over a decade and the first of several to be developed over the course of the next year in order to continually disseminate design-build best practices and teach effective integration of design and construction services.

“Best Value Selection,” “The Role of Qualifications in Selection of a Design-Builder” and “Integrated Project Delivery” were the topics of the initial release because these issues generate questions from practitioners as well as owners in a variety of industry sectors. These position statements are printed in full on pages 15-18 of this issue of Dateline or online here.

What’s your position? Email questions, comments or observations relating to “Best Value Selection,” “The Role of Qualifications in Selection of a Design-Builder” and “Integrated Project Delivery” to Susan Hines at shines@dbia.org. A spectrum of comments will be featured in an upcoming issue of the magazine.
