Sharp Mary Birch Hospital for Women and Newborns Remodel Project

Sharp Mary Birch Hospital for Women & Newborns Remodel Project

Challenge Design-Build Project Delivery Addressed:
Sharp Healthcare chose design-build delivery to bring a collaborative team on board early in order to define phasing and design solutions to facilitate the vision of the hospital while not impacting daily operations. The hospital was to remain operational throughout construction so it was imperative that the entire team work together to not only mitigate impact, but to actually define sequences of construction, speed the delivery of the project and provide feasible, cost effective solutions. A superior understanding of constructability issues, risk management and a mutual understanding of Sharp’s operational goals was especially paramount when working in this sensitive environment.

Summary:
Sharp Mary Birch hospital for Women and Newborns delivers more babies than any other hospital in California, provides normal and high risk Obstetrical, Newborn and Medical/Surgical Services and is home to one of the most respected Level III Neonatal Intensive Care Units in the world. The extensive remodel took place over multiple phases spanning several years while the facility remained fully operational.
